CEO Interview: Dimac Red

Space Tech Expo spoke to CEO of Dimac Red, Valter Arosio about his role, their recent work with supercapacitors and what he hopes to achieve at Space Tech Expo Europe this year.

Valter has a Master’s degree in Electronic Engineering from Politecnico of Milan University. In 1988 he joined LEONARDO SpA (formerly FIAR SpA) as a hardware designer involved in video processing of military airborne multimode radars. In 1995 he joined Dimac Red as a Field Application Engineer supporting sales of electronic components and subsystems under the manufacturer’s brand name. In 1998 he was promoted to Product Manager for different digital lines mainly aimed at the space and military markets. In 2003 he became Director of Sales & Operations, and in 2012 he was appointed CEO. Since Valter joined Dimac Red, the company has grown from nine to 35 members of staff.

Please tell us about your current role. What are your key focus areas and responsibilities?

My role is CEO and General Manager. I am responsible for the growth and consolidation of the business led by the product managers and business development managers, and the business generated by Dimac’s engineering products, plus the finance and administration. I legally represent the company. I also have full responsibility for defining medium- and long-term strategies to ensure that the company has the appropriate organisation to achieve our targets.

What do you think sets your company apart from your competitors?

Flexibility, zero bureaucracy, reinvestment of a big portion of the profits into the company. Our very skilled and technically oriented sales force is fully dedicated to working in niche applications, offering customers complementary services and adding value to what we are selling.

What are the key opportunities and challenges your company faces at present?

Key opportunities are with Dimac’s products based on smart energy storage systems. It is also a challenge because we must take care of multiple factors, such as compliance and manufacturing, which are typical of a production factory, rather than a distributor or representative. Other challenges are seen in making new lines more solid, and continuous research for new, advanced technologies suitable for our major customers.

Are there any new technology developments that you are working on at the moment? Can you tell us about them?

Dimac Red has always scouted for advanced new technologies. This is in our DNA and is the key to our future business success. We want to offer new ideas and innovative solutions to engineers. We are focused on niche markets and as such we must search for new devices, subsystems or technologies in general.

Currently we are dealing with supercapacitors, with solid state RF generators and amplifiers, with advanced new materials and with a revolutionary approach to get components qualified for space.

Applications. The latter item is really interesting and novel: it is leading the complex components for space applications to a new perspective. Dimac has a solid background in the space market, built on many years’ experience and passion working together with the most important companies and manufacturers.

What would you say most excites you about your role?

I like new opportunities to stay at the top of the technology, to meet new people, to perform new designs-in and to solve customer problems. As I used to say: “We love to make our customers happy and satisfied.” And I am working in that direction daily.

How do you think the industry will develop within the next five years? Can you tell us about the key trends emerging?

I think that companies will survive only if they are flexible, innovative, able to observe the market and respectful of their customers. High-quality goods are essential for success. For sure, Far East products will increase their quality and the level of innovation in the space market. In addition, at the components level, I am expecting to see more and more system in package developments to save space and weight and increase reliability. On the commercial side, e-commerce will grow.

What do you hope to achieve at the show next year, and what connections do you hope to make?

I hope to make more connections with customers and with suppliers who want to innovate and work with us. Actually, I like to consider them as ‘partners’ rather than ‘suppliers’ and I encourage myself and my team to work with ‘partners’. Again, what I used to say is, “We need business partners, not simple suppliers.” We have to work in this direction, looking around and selecting the right business partners.
